Heat welding comes into play in two other situations: fusing seams between sheets of vinyl, and, where a PVC gulley edge or transition profile is used at a retrofit drain, grooving and welding the sheet to that PVC profile. In continuously wet areas, sheet-to-sheet joints are normally hot welded when the flooring manufacturer requires it. Cold or chemical welding should only be used where that specific flooring system explicitly allows it \u2014 several manufacturers restrict their cold-weld products to dry environments, so treat this as a system-specific decision, not a convenience choice near a drain.<\/p>\n

        Terminating the sheet vinyl at the drain and relying on sealant alone is generally not treated as equivalent to a mechanically clamped wet-area detail, and most manufacturers don’t list it as a preferred method. My priority order on a retrofit is: first, see if the drain hardware itself can be swapped or modified into a clamping-style connection; second, if that isn’t possible, install a manufacturer-approved stainless drain ring, gulley profile, or transition system, which is still mechanically fastened and paired with the correct adhesive rather than sealed by adhesive on its own. I only reach for sealant to detail a specific narrow joint within that assembly, never as the main waterproofing strategy.<\/p>\n

Welding before the adhesive has cured, for example, is a common shortcut under schedule pressure, and it’s a frequent cause of seams that look fine on day one and fail months later.<\/p>\n

Don’t assume a finished PVC floor should be submerged for 24 hours unless the specific system you’re using is approved for that test. Where a flood test is required by the specification, follow the stage and duration set by the waterproofing, flooring, and drain manufacturers involved.<\/p>\n
