Many glue-down systems call for a smooth profile, often CSP 1 to 3, but the flooring, adhesive and primer data sheets set the final limit. Flatness, moisture and pH need separate checks.

I am an installation engineering director at a custom and bulk vinyl flooring manufacturer. I have worked on many projects where the vinyl was fine and the slab was the problem. The most common mistake I see is treating one CSP number as a pass or fail test. CSP only describes surface texture. It does not tell you if the slab is flat, clean, dry or ready to accept adhesive. Vinyl is thin and flexible, so it can show the texture, dips and high spots below it. That is why the slab matters as much as the product. The table below is a starting point only. Always confirm each number with the data sheets for your project.

Jenis Vinyl

Common Reference CSP

What Matters Most

Glue-Down LVT/LVP

Often CSP 1–3

Clean, sound, bondable surface

Lembaran Vinyl

Often the smoothest range allowed

Smooth, even surface

Click-Lock (LVP/SPC/WPC)

Set by maker

Flatness and local high spots

Commercial Vinyl

Set by system

Adhesive, primer and underlayment

First, let me explain what CSP measures and what it leaves out.

What Does CSP Measure and What Does It Not Tell You?

CSP describes the texture of a prepared concrete surface, from very smooth at CSP 1 to very rough at CSP 10, using ICRI replica chips. It does not measure flatness, levelness, cleanliness, absorption, moisture or pH.

Why One Number Is Not Enough

A slab can have a very fine texture and still have a dip that is too deep for the flooring. It can also be flat across the room and have a rough surface. These are different problems with different fixes. CSP is about texture. Flatness is about how much the surface rises and falls over a set distance. Levelness is about how close the surface is to a horizontal plane. Moisture and pH decide if the adhesive and flooring can stay stable over time. When I review a project, I ask for all of these checks, not just the CSP. I also ask what type of flooring will go on top, because glue-down and floating floors care about different things. Glue-down products care about texture, cleanliness and absorption. Floating products care mostly about flatness and local high spots.

Properti

What It Describes

How It Is Judged

CSP

Tekstur permukaan

ICRI replica chips

Kerataan

Dips and high spots

Straightedge or maker’s tolerance

Levelness

Closeness to horizontal

Slab design and survey

Moisture and pH

Moisture and chemical condition

Tests named in the data sheets

With that clear, let me go through the ranges for each type of vinyl.

What CSP Range Do Different Vinyl Floors Need?

Glue-down vinyl usually needs a smooth, clean, sound slab, and many adhesive data sheets list CSP 1 to 3. Click-lock vinyl depends more on flatness. Always follow the written limits from the flooring and adhesive makers.

Glue-Down and Click-Lock Floors Need Different Checks

For glue-down LVT, LVP and sheet vinyl, I focus on texture, cleanliness and absorption. Some adhesive data sheets list CSP 1 to 3, and others have tighter limits, so I never use one number for every system. Sheet vinyl and thin, glossy products show texture the most, so I aim for the smoothest surface the system allows. For click-lock products (LVP, SPC, WPC), flatness is the main check. A tolerance of 3/16 inch over 10 feet is widely used as a reference, and ASTM F710 refers to the same figure for concrete slabs. It is not a universal rule for every locking floor. Some makers allow more, some allow less, and some add limits over shorter distances. High spots can stress the locking joints and cause hollow sounds or clicking. For commercial projects, the primer, adhesive and underlayment often change the limit. When I work with product developers, I ask for these data sheets early, so the floor and the slab are designed to work together.

Jenis Lantai

Main Slab Checks

Source of the Final Limit

Glue-Down LVT/LVP

Texture, cleanliness, absorption, moisture

Flooring and adhesive data sheets

Lembaran Vinyl

Smoothness, cleanliness, moisture

Flooring and adhesive data sheets

Click-Lock LVP/SPC/WPC

Flatness, high spots, moisture

Flooring maker’s install guide

Commercial Vinyl

System compatibility

Full system data sheets

Next, let me show what can go wrong when the slab does not match the system.

What Happens When the Slab Is Too Rough or Too Dense?

A rough or uneven slab can show texture through thin vinyl, leave weak adhesive spots or stress click-lock joints. A dense or sealed slab can weaken adhesive bond. The risk depends on the product and the real slab condition.

Rough, Uneven and Dense Surfaces

I do not say that a certain CSP always causes a certain failure. The risk depends on the thickness of the vinyl, the gloss, the lighting, the adhesive and the actual surface. Still, I see the same patterns. A rough surface from shot blasting or scarifying can show bumps, ridges or grid marks through thin vinyl, especially under side light. Extra adhesive used to fill texture can leave soft spots or voids. A dense, power-troweled or sealed slab can cause the opposite problem. Adhesive may not bond well, and a primer under a leveling compound may not hold. Old adhesive, curing compounds and coatings also block bond, even on a slab with a good CSP. The answer is to inspect the real slab and judge it against the data sheets. Then decide if it needs mechanical prep, repair or a skim coat.

Kondisi

Kemungkinan Penyebab

Possible Risk

Rough or uneven

Shot blasting, scarifying, poor finishing

Texture showing, voids, joint stress

Dense or sealed

Hard troweling, sealers, curing compounds

Weak bond, primer failure

Contaminated

Oil, old adhesive, dust

Bond failure

So how do you check all of this before you install? Here is the order I use.

How Do You Know If a Concrete Slab Is Ready for Vinyl Flooring?

Identify the flooring and install method, then check texture, flatness, contamination, moisture and pH. Compare each result to the data sheets before you choose a repair, grind or leveling plan.

My Pre-Install Decision Flow

First, I confirm the product and install method: glue-down, sheet or floating. Second, I inspect the slab for oil, old adhesive, sealers, cracks and loose or weak concrete. Third, I compare the surface to ICRI CSP chips by sight and touch. Fourth, I check flatness with a straightedge against the maker’s tolerance. FF/FL numbers are a different tool. They rate floor flatness and levelness on specific concrete floors and are not another name for a straightedge check. Fifth, I run moisture and pH tests with the methods named in the data sheets. In-situ relative humidity testing is common. I also use a water drop test, but only as a quick screen. It can hint at a dense or sealed surface, but dust, residue and local differences can change the result. If the adhesive maker sets a porosity or absorption test, follow that method and its limits.

Langkah

Periksa

Tool or Method

1

Flooring and install type

Product data sheets

2

Contamination and soundness

Visual and hands-on inspection

3

Tekstur permukaan

ICRI CSP chips

4

Kerataan

Straightedge, maker’s tolerance

5

Moisture and pH

Methods named in data sheets

6

Absorption (if required)

Water drop screen, then maker’s test

Once you know the slab condition, you can choose the right prep.

How Do You Prepare the Slab for Vinyl Flooring?

Clean the slab, use mechanical prep only if your checks show it is needed, repair defects, apply a suitable skim coat or leveler where required, and check the finished surface again before installing.

Prep Methods and What to Re-Check

Start by removing oil, grease, curing compounds and dust. Old adhesive needs more care. Before you remove it, identify the material and find out if special testing or controlled removal is needed. Older adhesives and flooring can contain hazardous materials, and ASTM F710 warns against sanding or bead blasting to remove old resilient flooring residue. Use only removal methods that suit the old material and the new system. Next, choose mechanical prep based on what you found. Diamond grinding can remove coatings and high spots. Shot blasting can open a dense surface, but it can leave a deeper profile that needs a skim coat. I never promise that one method gives one CSP. The result depends on the concrete strength, tooling, number of passes and the original condition. After prep, inspect the slab again and compare it to the data sheets. Use patching or leveling products that the flooring maker accepts, and follow their primer and cure time rules.

Cracks need care too. Stable, non-structural cracks can often be repaired with a product approved for the system. Moving cracks and expansion joints should not be filled with a rigid material. Carry them through the flooring with a suitable joint detail.

Prep Step

Tujuan

Re-Check After

Clean and remove contaminants

Allow bond

Visual and tactile check

Grind or shot blast (if needed)

Remove coatings, open or reduce texture

Texture and flatness

Repair and level

Fix defects, smooth surface

Flatness, cure time, compatibility

Joint and crack detail

Allow safe movement

Maker’s joint requirements

Good prep also helps when you need to prove the work later.

How Do You Protect Your Warranty When Preparing the Slab?

Follow ASTM F710 as a general practice for concrete prep, then follow the written limits of the flooring, adhesive and primer makers. Keep photos, test results and logs for every step.

Standards, Data Sheets and Records

ASTM F710 covers how to judge and prepare concrete floors for resilient flooring. ASTM lists F710-26 as the most recent edition, and you should confirm the edition that applies to your project. I use it as the base practice, but it does not replace the written rules from the flooring or adhesive maker. Those rules set the specific CSP, flatness, moisture and pH limits. Before work starts, I collect the data sheets and make a short checklist. Warranty terms vary by maker, so read the written terms. Do not assume that one prep mistake voids everything, and do not assume you are covered without proof. Full records help you investigate a problem, find the cause and handle a claim. Take photos of the bare slab, the prep and every test. Log the date, readings, products and batch numbers.

Checklist Item

What to Collect

Flooring data sheet

Flatness, moisture, temperature limits

Adhesive data sheet

CSP, absorption, moisture and pH limits

Primer or leveler data sheet

Surface prep, cure time, compatibility

Crack and joint rules

Approved repair and joint details

Catatan

Photos, test results, logs, batch numbers

Now let me answer the questions I hear most from installers and product developers.

What Do Installers Ask Most About CSP and Vinyl Flooring?

The top questions are about shot-blasted slabs, smooth-looking concrete and cracks. The short answer is to judge each slab against the data sheets and not by feel or by one number.

Can I Install Vinyl Over Shot-Blasted Concrete?

Often not directly. Shot blasting can leave a profile that is too deep for thin vinyl, so many projects cap it with a skim coat or leveler first. Check the flooring and adhesive data sheets, and inspect the real surface.

Is Grinding Needed If the Concrete Feels Smooth?

Not always. A smooth feel does not show that adhesive will bond. Grind or otherwise treat the slab if you find high spots, sealers, old adhesive or a dense, over-troweled surface.

How Do I Handle Cracks and Expansion Joints?

First, find out if the crack is stable or moving, and if it is structural. Repair stable, non-structural cracks with an approved product. Do not fill expansion joints or moving cracks with rigid material. Carry them through the flooring with a proper joint detail.

Kesimpulan

Match the slab to the system.
